The Visualization

Many of the topics in Mesh have never before been actualized with computer graphics while other concepts had only been communicated through very laconic, clinical means.  Janzen and Poltheir saw Mesh as an opportunity to expand the possibilities of mathematical visualization.

"Mesh provides a unique and unprecedented visualization of advanced differential geometric properties and constructions." says Polthier.  "Nobody has ever seen this visually enlightening scientific explanation for the construction of bubbles or topics like the Schwatz Lantern before"

"Computer animation has already changed the way we make movies.  It can generate visual effects that were previously unthought-of, and has even changed the kind of scripts that can be produced." says Janzen, "Now, we want to bring the same revolution to education.  We can visualize concepts that used to only exist as abstractions, and can expand the possibilities of what content can be taught."

While the visualization should open up these advanced geometric concepts to novice learners, the creators of Mesh believe that there will also be a strong appeal for the experts. "I see Mesh as being able to give a certain catharsis.", says Janzen, "To see these concepts made concrete for the first time would be like finally seeing a favorite play performed on stage."
